Turmeric stains: off your skin, your towel and your basin

Turmeric stains: off your skin, your towel and your basin

Use turmeric on your skin and sooner or later something yellow ends up where it should not be. A towel, a flannel, the rim of your basin.

Almost no shop selling turmeric tells you this beforehand. We will, because it is the most predictable complaint there is, and it is easy to deal with once you know how.

Start dry. This is the rule that matters.

Loose powder you wet is a stain you have set yourself. Water activates the dye and helps it into the fibre.

If there is powder, take it off dry first. Vacuum it, or press tape onto it and lift. Do not rub, do not rinse. Only once the dry part is gone do you introduce moisture.

Off your skin

Curcumin dissolves in fat, not water. That is exactly why soap smears it and oil lifts it.

A cleansing oil, or a little ordinary vegetable oil on a cotton pad, works better here than scrubbing with soap. Our Turmeric Cleansing Oil is doing that at the end of your routine anyway.

If a cast remains, a paste of bicarbonate of soda and a little water, gently, then rinse. On lighter skin the rest usually fades within a day.

Off towels and clothes

Two things work, both cheap:

Bicarbonate of soda. Make a thick, damp paste, work it into the stain with an old toothbrush, leave it a while, then wash as usual.

Vinegar. Two tablespoons of white vinegar, half a litre of warm water, a tablespoon of washing-up liquid. Dab with a cloth, blot dry, repeat. Dab, do not rub — rubbing pushes the colour further into the fibre.

The trick nobody expects

Put it in the sun.

Curcumin breaks down under UV. A stain still visible after washing will often simply go if you leave the item in daylight for an afternoon. It costs nothing and it works remarkably well on white fabric.

Speed matters

Treat it the same day. A turmeric stain left for a week is far harder to shift — and after a hot wash it is often permanent, because heat fixes it. Treat first, wash second.

Why a made product stains less than powder from the kitchen cupboard

This is the honest difference between a mask you buy and one you mix, and it is not about which works better.

Kitchen turmeric is a hundred per cent dye. A skincare product carries a much lower concentration, plus ingredients that make it lift and rinse rather than bind.

The Turmeric & Niacinamide Cleansing Foam rinses clean and leaves nothing behind. The Turmeric Peel-Off Mask comes away in one sheet, which skips most of the problem entirely.

That is not a promise about your skin. It is a promise about your towels.
