Is turmeric safe for your skin?

Is turmeric safe for your skin?

We sell turmeric. That does not make us the most independent source, so here is the version without the sales pitch: for most people turmeric on skin is fine, and there is a small group for whom it is not.

This is about that small group, and how to find out whether you are in it.

Turmeric is in the ginger family

Turmeric, ginger, cardamom and galangal are all in the same plant family. That is the most useful rule of thumb available: if you have a known ginger allergy, your chance of reacting to turmeric is higher than average.

That does not mean you will. It means you should not start blind.

Contact allergy exists, and is rare

There are documented cases of allergic contact dermatitis and hives following skin contact with turmeric or curcumin — including in people who worked with it occupationally, such as in food production where curcumin is used as a colouring.

"Documented cases" is precisely what they are. It is not a common problem, and it is not zero either. What to watch for: itching, redness that does not settle, small bumps, a burning feeling that persists.

A slight tingle in the first minute is not the same as a reaction. A burning feeling that gets worse after ten minutes rather than better is.

Patch test. It costs two days.

For any new product, not just this kind:

  1. Put a little on the inside of your forearm.
  2. Leave it. Do not rinse.
  3. Look after 24 hours, and again after 48.

No redness, no itch, no bumps? Then try it on your face. Something? Then you know now, somewhere nobody can see, instead of the day before a wedding.

When we simply advise against it

  • On broken or irritated skin. Wait until it has healed.
  • While your skin is already reacting to something else. One thing at a time, or you will never know which it was.
  • With a known allergy to ginger or related plants, without patch testing first.
  • Around your eyes, unless the product is explicitly made for it.

If you are unsure because you are using something a doctor prescribed, ask your pharmacist. That is not a politeness — a pharmacist answers this kind of question free and knows what else you are taking. We do not.

Where to start if your skin reacts easily

Not with turmeric. Turmeric is a spice with colour and scent, and that is not a gentle opening for reactive skin.

Start instead with the Centella Calming Essence or the Soothing Cream, and look at turmeric later. If you do want to try it, begin with something you rinse off rather than something that stays on — the Turmeric & Niacinamide Cleansing Foam spends less time on your skin than anything else we sell.

What we are not claiming here

That turmeric cures, calms or treats anything. We are not permitted to say it and we do not know it either.

What we do know is what is in it, and that is on every product page. The rest is between you and your skin.
