Biotin for hair growth: what the evidence actually shows
Biotin (vitamin B7) is the most heavily marketed supplement for hair growth — but its evidence base is narrower than most brands suggest. Biotin deficiency is genuinely rare in the developed world. Biotin supplementation shows clear, measurable benefit for hair growth only in people who are biotin-deficient. Biotin deficiency symptoms include: hair thinning or loss, brittle nails, skin rashes, and neurological symptoms. Risk groups: pregnant women, people with chronic alcohol use, people taking long-term antibiotics or anticonvulsants, and people with biotinidase deficiency (a rare genetic condition). For people who are not biotin-deficient, the evidence for biotin supplementation improving hair growth is weak — a 2017 review in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology found no strong evidence for biotin supplementation improving hair or nail growth in healthy individuals without deficiency.
Collagen peptides: the stronger evidence for skin
Collagen peptides (hydrolysed collagen) have a substantially better evidence base for skin than biotin has for hair. A 2019 systematic review in the Journal of Drugs in Dermatology analysed 11 randomised controlled trials involving 805 patients and found that oral collagen supplementation (2.5–10g daily) significantly improved skin elasticity, hydration, and density versus placebo over 8–24 weeks. The mechanism: hydrolysed collagen is broken down into dipeptides and tripeptides that are absorbed into the bloodstream, enter dermal tissue, and stimulate fibroblasts to upregulate type I collagen synthesis. The body cannot distinguish between dietary and supplemental collagen from a biosynthesis standpoint. Marine collagen (from fish skin) is most bioavailable because its hydroxyproline-proline dipeptide is identical in structure to the most abundant peptide in human dermal collagen.
Co-factors that determine whether supplements work
Even the best-evidenced supplements fail to deliver results without the correct co-factors. For collagen synthesis, the rate-limiting nutrient is vitamin C — the hydroxylation steps that stabilise the collagen triple helix require vitamin C as an enzyme cofactor. Without adequate vitamin C, supplemental collagen precursors cannot be assembled into functional collagen fibres. Take 250–500mg vitamin C alongside collagen peptides. For biotin absorption, a full B-vitamin complex improves biotin utilisation — individual B vitamins are more efficiently absorbed when taken together rather than in isolation. Before spending money on specialised hair supplements, test ferritin levels — ferritin below 30 ng/mL is associated with hair shedding even when haemoglobin is within normal range.

How to take beauty supplements for best results
Timing and pairing affect supplement efficacy. Collagen peptides: take with a vitamin C source (orange juice, supplement, or kiwi). Morning or post-workout (when protein synthesis rates are elevated). Iron: take on an empty stomach for maximum absorption, with vitamin C. Never take within 2 hours of calcium, dairy, or coffee — all inhibit iron absorption. Biotin and B vitamins: take with food to reduce nausea. The B-complex is best taken in the morning as it can be stimulating. Tocotrienols: fat-soluble — take with a meal containing some dietary fat. Zinc: take with food to reduce stomach upset; do not take within 2 hours of iron (they compete for the same absorption transporter). Expect a minimum 3-month commitment for any supplement before evaluating whether it is working — hair and skin have slow biological turnover cycles that make short-term evaluations unreliable.
