The three different causes of dark circles
Dark circles are not one condition — they are three different conditions that look similar. Understanding which type you have determines which ingredients will work. Vascular dark circles: caused by thin under-eye skin revealing blood vessels, or by pooled blood and lymphatic fluid. Appear bluish-purple. Worse in the morning, after poor sleep, or alcohol consumption. Best addressed by caffeine (vasoconstriction), vitamin K (supports blood vessel integrity), and peptides (thicken the skin over time). Pigmented dark circles: caused by excess melanin under the eyes — common in South Asian and African skin tones and genetically inherited. Appear brown. Consistent at all times of day. Best addressed by brightening actives: vitamin C, niacinamide, kojic acid, retinol (used very carefully in the eye area). Structural dark circles: caused by hollowing under the eye (tear trough) creating a shadow — a structural/anatomical issue. Not addressable by skincare; filler is the most effective intervention.
Caffeine: the best evidenced ingredient for puffiness and vascular circles
Caffeine is the most consistently evidence-backed ingredient for under-eye puffiness and vascular dark circles. It works through vasoconstriction — constricting dilated blood vessels under the eye that contribute to dark circle discoloration — and by stimulating lymphatic drainage, which reduces fluid accumulation causing puffiness. A 2010 study in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology found 3% caffeine gel significantly reduced under-eye puffiness measurements compared to placebo over 4 weeks. Eye patches containing caffeine combined with hyaluronic acid produce the most pronounced short-term effect (20–30 minute contact time allows higher concentration delivery than a regular eye cream). For sustained results, use a caffeine eye serum or cream twice daily for at least 4 weeks.
Peptides and retinol for long-term eye area improvement
The under-eye area has approximately 40% less collagen density than the rest of the face, which is why it shows ageing and fatigue earliest. Peptides — short amino acid chains that signal to fibroblasts to produce collagen — are the safest active for thickening the under-eye skin over time. Look for: palmitoyl pentapeptide-4 (Matrixyl), acetyl hexapeptide-3, or copper peptides GHK-Cu. A 2009 clinical study found Matrixyl 3000 reduced wrinkle depth in the eye area by an average of 27% after 2 months of twice-daily use. Retinol in the eye area requires a very low-concentration formula (0.01–0.025%) applied only to the orbital bone, not directly beneath the eye — the skin here is thinner and more sensitive than the rest of the face. Retinol eye creams meaningfully reduce fine lines after 12+ weeks of consistent use.
Vitamin C and brighteners for pigmented dark circles
For pigmented dark circles — the brown discolouration caused by hyperpigmentation rather than blood vessels — brightening actives are the correct treatment path. Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) at 5–10% in a stable formula inhibits tyrosinase activity and neutralises free radicals that accelerate melanin production. The challenge with vitamin C in the eye area is stability: vitamin C oxidises quickly and becomes ineffective (turns orange in the bottle). Look for encapsulated vitamin C, vitamin C derivatives (ascorbyl glucoside, sodium ascorbyl phosphate), or formulas in airless packaging. Niacinamide 4–5% is well-tolerated in the eye area and reduces melanin transfer to surface cells. Kojic acid eye creams work but require patch testing — some formulations cause contact sensitivity. For the strongest effect on pigmented under-eye circles: a combination of vitamin C serum applied in the morning under SPF (UV exposure worsens under-eye pigmentation) with niacinamide in the evening.
Eye patches: how to maximise results
Under-eye patches (hydrogel or biocellulose) work by occlusion — the patch prevents evaporation and forces a concentrated formula into close contact with skin for 15–20 minutes. This delivers actives at significantly higher effective concentration than standard cream application. How to maximise results: refrigerate patches before use (the cold temperature adds to the vasoconstriction and lymphatic drainage effect). Apply to clean, product-free skin. Leave for 20 minutes, not longer — after 20 minutes, the formula is depleted and the patch begins to reabsorb moisture from the skin. Pat in any remaining serum rather than rinsing. Use patches 2–3 times per week as an intensive treatment; daily eye cream for maintenance. Combine with gentle lymphatic drainage massage: press softly from the inner corner of the eye outward along the orbital bone, 5–10 repetitions each side.
