Turmeric for skin: supplement or cream?

Turmeric for skin: supplement or cream?

Search for "turmeric for skin" and you will almost certainly land on capsules. The large health chains sell turmeric as a supplement, and that dominates the results.

But a supplement and a cream are not two versions of the same thing. They do something different, in a different place, and it is worth knowing which one you are looking for.

The supplement: swallowing it

Turmeric supplements deliver curcumin to the body through digestion. They are usually combined with black pepper (piperine), and that is not marketing — curcumin is poorly absorbed on its own, and piperine raises that absorption considerably.

What a supplement does not do is change anything about your skin specifically. What you swallow goes everywhere. There is no mechanism that routes curcumin to your face.

Important: health claims on supplements are tightly regulated in the EU. A supplement may not claim to treat a skin condition. If a package does, that is a reason for suspicion.

The cream: applying it

A turmeric product on the skin works locally. It sits where you put it and it mainly affects the top layer: how smooth it is, how much water it holds, how it reflects light.

That is a more modest promise than "glowing from within", and it is also a more honest one. You can see whether it works, because the effect is where you applied it.

Which do you choose?

Supplement Applied to skin
Works throughout the body where you apply it
Effect visible not directly on the skin itself
Regulated as a food supplement a cosmetic
Makes sense when you have a general goal you want something for your skin

If you want to change how your skin feels and looks, a product applied to the skin is the logical answer. If you want to take turmeric for another reason, that is a conversation with your doctor or pharmacist — not with a webshop.

Both at once?

There is nothing wrong with it. But do not expect the supplement to do the cream's job, or the other way round. They are two products with two purposes, and a brand suggesting they achieve the same thing is probably selling you two where you needed one. If you do want two that were meant to go together, the Turmeric Cream & Oil Duo is one box rather than two guesses.

What we sell

We sell turmeric on the skin: cleansers like the Turmeric & Niacinamide Cleansing Foam, creams like the Turmeric Clarifying Cream and the Turmeric Neck & Face Cream, and the Turmeric Cleansing Oil. No supplements. That is a choice rather than a shortcoming — skin is where we can say something useful.

And as our turmeric collection says: turmeric does not lighten your skin, and we do not sell anything that promises it will.
